Those who remember treading those  16 steep steps down to that magical grotto, The Purple Onion, will take heart that, after being closed for a decade following a shooting incident, the 50-year-old club has once more been opened as a comedy venue.

With an effort to capture its former ambience, new owners tephanie and Mario Ascione, who also operate the upstairs restaurant, Macaroni Sciue Sciue have done the place over in dark wood tones with red accents, the brick walls being decorated with musical instruments.

Old friends will happily recognize the backdrop for the stage.  It's  the original orange and purple sign of the club, which was kept in storage and has been carefully restored for its present service.

First re-opened on New Years Eve for musical entertainment, the reborn Purple Onion is now primarily featuring stand-up comics in the tradition of the great names who graced it in the glory years.  It can be said that their presence lingers in the walls. As one of the new headliners at  the Purple Onion pointed out, “my jokes feel grander down here. This is a big stage to step on."
