Ernie Sheldon, born Ernest Liebermann,  had been singing professionally since the mid 1940s when he joined The Gateway Singers in 1958 on the departure of Lou Gottlieb.

Associated with People's Songs and People's Artists in the 1940s and 50s, Ernie Sheldon was one of the first musicians to record on the Hootenanny label.

Both a composer and arranger as well as fine singer and guitarist, he is best known as author of the Glenn Yarbrough hit, “Baby, The Rain Must Fall.” He was also distinguished as a member of The Limeliters, as well as being an early editor of the folk magazine “Sing Out.”

There was also much  solo work and with other singers.
With Joyce Sheldon, he put out the LP “Sing of Laughter,”  And for Columbia, he recorded the single “Billy's Ridin'” and the LP “The Big Men, Bold and Bad” with The Villagers.

In addition to the chart runner, he did other composing for the screen, including the theme for the TV series "Here Come the Brides" and "Young Billy Young," written in collaboration with Shelly Mann  in 1969.

A native of Brooklyn, but confirmed southern California resident, In the late-night world of cabaret artists, Ernie Sheldon set himself apart as a family man who arose at an early hour to maintain a precise fitness schedule.  His beautiful rendition of “Shenandoah” is one of The Gateway Singers' classics.
