EAST VIRGINIA BLUES
Sung with an easy sense of relaxation in live performance at The Troubadour (“On Cue”), this sublime version of the classic folk/blues tune has a simplicity that is magic. The singer sights a woman, and, without his ever becoming acquainted with her, she becomes the object of his passion, a tale that harks back to all the strangers and might-have-been relationships which populate a lifetime.
E LA BAS
A perpetual crowd pleaser - often with audience participation - this New Orleans song, partially done in the local French slang, was a staple of any Travis Edmonson concert. It was also released as a single, and can be found on two live albums (“In Concert Volume 2” - as well as the CD of that show - and “Live at UC Santa Barbara”).
ELLEN
Which heart wouldn't be stolen by this moving narration of the precious qualities of Ellen whose “touch was softer than a cloud,” and by the pervading sense of loss her absence brought? A Travis Edmonson composition from “on His Own”)
EVERYBODY LOVES SATURDAY NIGHT
This was a song which Travis Edmonson introduced into The Gateway Singers repertoire in the mid-fifties, but was unfortunately never recorded by the group. All the worth waiting for the Bud & Travis “In Concert” album.
Joyously topping off the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium performance in March 1960, it seems to capture the essence of a magnificent and sparkling night, one which lives on and on in the hearts of old fans, and via the “Santa Monica Concert” CD, brings so many new ones to the fold.
On its own, with its references to liberation and letting loose, “Everybody Loves Saturday Night” would bring any audience alive, but on this recording of it, there is a sense of elation on stage which carries into the crowd, and sweeps them away on the same wave. A glorious moment to treasure forever.
EVERY NIGHT WHEN THE SUN GOES IN (“Suzanne”)
Also sung by Travis Edmonson as a member of The Gateway Singers on their first album, “Puttin' on the Style,” under the title “True Love,” this Harry Belafonte piece reached new heights under the patronage of Travis Edmonson. On Volume 2 of “In Concert,” it is high on the list of his most appealing performances. His capacity to convey every nuance of pathos in a blues song, and to hold an audience in the palm of his hand is all here in this touching performance.
